NEW Yin/Yang Workout!!

Intense fitness training is something that Kimberly Fowler did daily for most of her life as a competitive athlete. When she left the athletic arena for the legal one she quickly recognized the difficulty in balancing work and exercise. An hour a day at the gym just didn't give her the intensity she was used to. "You go to the gym, there are distractions, you're still thinking about work, etc. It takes time to get focused and time is what most of us just don't have enough of," says Fowler. So she began a 5 year exploration of everything from aerobics to tai chi before she identified what she felt was the perfect combination for the body, the mind, and the Soul … YAS.

So what is YAS? Self Magazine describes it as "Zen with Wheels." Voted top "Hot Spot" by In Style Magazine. YAS (pronounced Yaz) is an acronym for Yoga and Spinning. Fowler's goal was to combine the high intensity cardiovascular benefits of spinning (group stationary biking to music led by an instructor) with the flexibility enhancing and relaxation benefits of Yoga. YAS class is a perfect health option in today's busy world. The body is first energized and warmed through a 30 minute spinning class. "Spinning is amazing," says Fowler "With the right music and instruction you are instantly focused and motivated … you simply forget everything else. When students move on to yoga they are already in tune with their breathing and all major muscle groups are warm. This allows them to relax into asanas (postures) much more easily. It's such a perfect combination. You feel good after each class and you see results quickly. It becomes addicting," added Fowler.

Bringing her dream to fruition was not an easy task. Fowler spent 14 months looking for the perfect location for YAS before she found a 70 year-old building on the historic corner Abbot Kinney and Westminster in trendy Venice Beach, California. For 6 months she single handedly acted as contractor, architect, and designer to bring her unique vision to reality. The results of her efforts are impressive. Using elements such as exposed brick, open beamed ceilings, unfinished concrete, stained hardwood and custom lighting, Fowler created a space that in addition to housing YAS, has become a highly sought after location for commercial photographic shoots.

Describing YAS as a fitness studio is an understatement. YAS is an experience … it's a break from life's challenges, it's a place where you meet great people, have fun, burn calories, train every major muscle group, calm your mind, and soothe your soul. Venice resident, writer, producer Alene Alegra comes to YAS nearly everyday. "It may sound strange, but all I can say is it changed my life," says Alegra.
