Saul Zonana Continues to Make "Waves" in the Music Industry
June 23, 2004 -- New York-based singer/ songwriter/ producer/ touring musician Saul Zonana might wear a lot of hats, but combined with an intense work ethic, his exceptional talent is starting to become nationally recognized. Saul's latest release, Waves, has spawned the radio single "Holiday" on several New York area commercial radio stations, including Clear Channel station Star 93. As a result, Waves is outselling Matchbox Twenty, Michelle Branch and others at the Media Play store in Star 93's immediate market.
But not one to rest on his laurels, Saul is currently working on his next release with Nashville based producer Adrian Belew, who as a songwriter and musician has been a member of and/or toured and recorded with the likes of King Crimson, Frank Zappa, David Bowie, Primus and the Talking Heads, among others. "There is a chemistry that I wouldn't have predicted," Saul says of working with Belew. "But I guess because of how much I have been influenced by him in the past, we happen to work very well together. It has become a very natural process."
And with Belew, there is definitely a mutual admiration. "It's really good pop music," he says of Saul's material. "The two songs we've done so far, I'm having a hard time shaking them out of my brain." He also says that working with Zonana has been one of the best collaborations he's been involved with as a producer. "The material he brought was open for me to do things with," he says. "I had some free reign and I felt like were both on the same exact track." So much so that the two will be working on more material next month, and plans are in the works for a late 2004 release to build on the regional success of Waves.
For his 2001 release, Guinea Pigs, Saul worked with producers/engineers Peter Moshay (Mariah Carey, Fishbone, Hall and Oates) at A-Pawling Studio and Peter Denenberg (Spin Doctors, Martin Sexton, Deep Purple) at Acme studios. This album includes the song "Fool on a Bicycle," which was a winner in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest and earned third place in the Billboard World Songwriting Contest in 2003. In addition, the track "Afraid of Dying" was recently picked up for the film Will Unplugged, set for release in 2005. Saul signed in 2003 with Transition Music, and in 2004 with Pitch Music, the same company that is pitching Belew's music to film and TV, and the reason the two were brought together.
A prolific songwriter, Saul has an extensive catalog of recorded music, and in 1999 signed his first major publishing deal with MCA. He also signed his first record deal with independent label TVT Records in 2000, releasing his self-titled debut to critical acclaim. He now releases his music on his own 20/20 Music and is again being courted by major labels.
Saul and his band, which he shares with singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright, recently returned from a West Coast road trip on which they were the opening act for Joan Osborne. They also recently showcased at the International Pop Overthrow festival, North by Northeast and the Millennium Music Conference. Next month Saul will be part of the Crash Test Dummies tour in the Southwest at arena-sized venues.
Saul has produced and recorded his last two releases at his own professional studio, which now comprises the entire first floor of his New York home. Saul has performed as part of Ace Frehley's band, and has produced tracks for him as well. His lengthy list of writing, production and musician credits also includes a Blue Oyster Cult remix of "Don't Fear The Reaper," tracks by Taylor Dayne, and radio remixes for Paula Cole. Many other independent artists and bands have been recording and mixing their albums at Saul's studio as well. Two that he is particularly proud of are the Day Traders, set to release their new album in August, and his favorite singer/songwriter, Nicole McKenna, who is gearing up for her next release in November.
