It's Time to Put Your Hats On for BSE Research

Calgary, Alberta June 2, 2004 -- The Alberta beef industry is very important to Smithbilt, the WPCA and the UFA, with Smithbilt, WPCA and the UFA all having roots in Alberta dating back to the early 1900's, all around the time of the beginnings of the beef industry in Alberta.

A classic Bangora straw hat has been exclusively designed for this initiative incorporating an Alberta Beef clasp on the band. It is now available for individuals, groups and corporations to purchase to show their support for the beef industry. These promotional hats will be available exclusively at the 34 UFA Farm & Ranch Stores throughout Alberta. Three ($3.00) dollars from each hat sale will be donated to BSE research.

"Smithbilt's ongoing success has been, in a large part, due to the support we have received from the ranching industry. It is, therefore, an honour for us to participate in this program which gives us an opportunity to give back to our community. We are pleased to be associated with the WPCA and Alberta Beef Producers in this effort." Wade Schultz - President, Smithbilt Hats. www.smithbilthats.com

The World Professional Chuckwagon Association attends events at 10 different venues throughout Alberta each year, and will be promoting this initiative at each event to show they care. "We're very excited about being involved with Smithbilt and UFA to put money towards BSE research. It's a good tie-in for us as a lot of our Chuckwagon racers have cattle. WPCA is bringing this initiative to our events to show our support, as many of our members are farmers and ranchers, and this is very important to all of us." Cal Carratt – President of WPCA. www.wpca.com

"With over 30,000 beef producers here in Alberta, we are extremely grateful for this support. The past year has been devastating for all people associated with the beef industry and support is still needed. The producers are continuing to work towards a sustainable and competitive beef industry. We are appreciative of the loyalty consumers and organizations are showing." Christie Cockwill – Manager, Promotions and Education for Alberta Beef Producers. www.albertabeef.org

These special promotional hats are available exclusively at the 34 UFA Farm & Ranch Stores throughout Alberta. Should groups or corporations wish to sponsor this cause, hats can also be purchased in larger quantities.
